Speaking on the selection process, President of the CMCT, Surat Mayteekul Ph.D. said, "The first round was a written examination which tested applicants' English and news writing skills. It consisted of four parts; listening, general knowledge, grammar, and English news writing. This year the first-round qualifiers had an opportunity to attend a workshop on "the news process" led by Thai leading news veterans such as Mr Pongsak Payakvichien, Chairman of the Press Council of Thailand; Mr Banyong Suwanpong, CEO of the Press Development Institute of Thailand; Mr Kitti Singhapad, ITV's Deputy Director of Program; Assistant Professor Malee Boonsiripunth from the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication, Thammasart University, and Mr Prasong Lertratanawisut, Senior Editor from Matichon newspaper. Afterwards the qualifiers underwent an interview session with a committee of representatives from UBC, BBC World, and CMCT. The written examination and interview session were conducted in English.
"All first-round qualifiers have demonstrated fascinating skills, with good English. However, the two winners have been outstanding in their general knowledge as well as their analyses of the world affairs. They are eager to learn new things, which is a crucial attribute for news reporters. CMCT is very pleased to see the youth of today in Thailand keeping up with the world and possessing the readiness to communicate and strive for a career in journalism."
Nic van Zwanenberg, Regional Director, Distribution and Business Development, BBC World, said: "BBC World is renowned and respected
around the globe for its outstanding journalism and for its analysis of the stories behind the headlines. I'm delighted that the channel will be able to offer Jananya and Chalida a unique insight into the world's largest newsgathering operation. I'm confident that they will make the most of this rare opportunity to develop their skills as journalists and congratulate them on winning this competition."
The two UBC-BBC World Future Journalist Award winners are scheduled to leave BBC World, London in May 2006. The Bangkok-London round-trip
tickets are sponsored by Thai Airways International.
