Subscriber Numbers

6. Subscriber numbers have remained flat for the 1st 6 months of the year as a result of the increasing in up front recoveries to Baht 8,000 in January 2001 and Baht 11,000 in April 2001 from an average up front recovery from subscribers of Baht 6,500 for the previous year as an immediate response to the weakening in Thai Baht to over Baht 45.5 to USD which put pressure on TrueVisions operating costs such as programming costs thus reducing margins and increases net acquisition cost as decoders are USD denominated. Management was aware that the up front recovery increases would deter consumers significantly and as such also cut back on marketing spend as it would be difficult with high recoveries to drive growth. This was a temporary response to stem cash consumption while a detailed strategy revision was being prepared to counter the weaker Thai Baht. This revision was completed by July 2001 and after being rolled out results in the groups return to a position to re-invest in subscriber growth.
7. We announced the price increase in July 2001 and the subscriber base for July shrunk by 1,612 subscribers. In August 2001 we grew by a net 5,273 subscribers and in September 2001 by 4,996 subscribers on the back of strong marketing and promotion. The growth for Q3 last year was 7,346 subscribers. This underpins the importance of this quarters performance of 8,657 subscribers as last year we did not have an 18% increase in subscription fees. We expect this trend of growth to continue as we are now in a position again to invest in growing the subscriber base.
8. Growth for Q3 2002, when compared to last year was lower as a result of no promotions being run in Q3 02 as compared to Q3 01. The reason for this is that international channel operators had advised us that they intended to take action against provincial cable operators violating copyright law. As such management preferred to assess the impact of such action before launching new promotion campaigns as well as work on strategies to provide TrueVisions channels to provincial cable operators.
9. YTD growth has come as a result of the swap out of smart cards which has eliminated the possibility of receiving TrueVisions signals without paying a subscription fee using DTH equipment and a pirate or illegal smart card. Further TrueVisions has continued to run promotions through the year to drive subscriber growth while in 2001 promotions were only launched Q3 01 as we were restructuring the business in first half of 2001 to deal with the impact of a weakening Baht USD exchange rate
